We built this website as a tool to support online escape rooms. Originally the tool was created to support remote learning during the COVID-19 pandemic but we hope that you will find it useful even now.

We wrote this short guide to help you build your own original content. Once you’ve created a game, we encourage you to share it with us so that we can share it with the rest of our users at support@getapadlock.com.The site may contain ads which are used only to keep the site online.

This guide will help you create your own original content.

To build an exciting escape room you should first think of a story or a subject. This will help you outline the escape room and drive your users to complete it. Once you have your outline, in which the players might have a time cap to solve a problem, we recommend writing a draft of the different riddles. Each riddle should have a single solution that contains digits or letters. It is most effective to have complete numbers or words as your solution.

Now that you have the layout of your game, it’s time to build! We recommend using one of the following platforms to build riddles:

  1. Wizer
  2. Quizlet
  3. PlayPosit
  4. Youtube
  5. Google Docs
  6. Google Forms

Each riddle will be a single document in these platforms and would be most effective using assets such as pictures, videos and references. Once your players think they have a solution, your document should direct them to a predefined link in getapadlock.com. These are links that will contain the solution and the followup link which you will need to prepare beforehand. We recommend games contain about 8 riddles and be 30-40 minutes long.

To generate padlock pages, go to https://www.getapadlock.com/ select the length of your solution, the secret the padlock is holding, usually a continuation of the story and a link to the follow up question and the actual solution. Generate the link and use that link in your riddle page.

Our website contains simple examples of short escape rooms that you can feel free to use or get inspiration from. We hope this short guide will help you build your next game, which you can use at any time and for any purpose: school, work, or fun.
